The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has said that no economy can grow when private initiative is replaced with political control. The 24-hour economy empty talk has darkened the hopes of many youth expecting jobs,” he said in his opening remarks when sitting resumed in Parliament on Tuesday, October 21.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted that recent labor unrest indicates a significant disconnect between the government and the public. Over 200 junior doctors have worked for ten months without pay, and more than 800 others remain unposted. “These are the stories of the hardships people face. A government that fails to compensate its frontline workers cannot claim to care for its citizens. Mr. Speaker, the NPP government’s ‘One District, One Factory’ initiative was intended to drive industrial growth and create sustainable jobs through private sector participation.”
These stories highlight the hardships faced by many individuals. A government that neglects to pay its frontline workers cannot genuinely claim to care for its citizens. Mr. Speaker, we need to drive industrial growth and create sustainable jobs through private sector involvement. However, recent government actions clearly demonstrate a lack of commitment to this vision.
Rather than offering genuine support to existing private enterprises and reducing the cost of doing business, new bureaucracies are being established, which frustrates both investors and entrepreneurs. This situation stifles innovation, discourages productivity, and risks overwhelming the public sector with inefficiencies that the private sector was intended to address.
