President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Black Stars for their impressive performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, calling for sustained investment in the national team and sports infrastructure to build on the country’s football success.
He was speaking in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, after inspecting the Ho Sports Stadium.
We need to start preparing for the next World Cup. Nobody gave them a chance, but the Black Stars did well to reach the round of 32.
“If we keep this team and persuade Carlos Queiroz to stay, I’m sure that by the next World Cup or AFCON, we can claim the title.” — President Mahama.
Ghana beat Panama, drew with England, and lost to Croatia and Colombia. Antoinne Semenyo won the MOTM in the first game. Some revelations in the Ghana team, the Black Stars were goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, Brandon Thomas Asante, and Caleb Yirenkyi.
According to the President, Ghana needs to get five modern stadia to be able to bid for hosting the African Cup of Nations. He expressed that Ghana can join with neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire to co-host.
Ghana has not won the African Cup since 1982; however, the Black Stars are four-time African champions in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982. Ghana has won the FIFA U17 World Cup in Italy in 1991 and in Ecuador in 1995.
Ghana is also the first African country to win the FIFA U20 World Championship in 2009.
