The Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), Mr. Shaaban Mohammed, has urged young girls to create the interest in and affection for cycling.
Speaking at the presentation of three racing bikes to the Federation from Re Cycling Bikes to Africa through Village Bicycle Project, he said one of the bicycles will go to a female cyclist.
He expressed that as the Federation prepares for the 2026 Tour du Ghana, more female cyclists will participate in the criterion events.
According to Mr. Mohammed, cyclists are going to enjoy the Tour du Ghana because plans are to make it attractive and rewarding.
He said more cyclists are expected to ride longer distances and more sponsors are encouraged to support the Ghana Cycling Federation.
“This year we hope more girls will participate; we want more girls in the national team so that they can represent Ghana at international events,” he said.
He thanked the donors and hoped that more bikes would be presented in the future.
Ms. Charlotte Ward, Executive Director of Re Cycling Ride to Africa, who presented the bikes, urged girls to ride because bicycles are for everyone, both male and female.
She noted that the benefits of riding are enormous, and for so many years they have been working in African countries like Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa for over 20 years.
“We have sent more than 50,000 bicycles in various forms to Ghana, some for adults, children, mountain bikes and road race bikes; we want more people to start riding, especially girls,” she said.
Marc Leeks, who accomplished this, said it is fantastic going round some interesting places in the northern and Volta regions of Ghana.
