The 18-hole Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono is crying for protection and safety as encroachers have pulled down their wall and invaded their course.
The Captain, Mr. Alex Oppong Baffoe, and some members of the club spoke to the media after a tour of the course on Wednesday to ascertain what is happening on the grounds. He expressed that the course is losing its nature as some birds have left, and the course suffers from watering to be green because the source of water has been taken over by the builders.
“We are law-abiding citizens, but the law has not been fair to us. We don’t want to take the law into our own hands,” he said.
He noted that some of their members are leaving to play elsewhere.
The golfers said the way encroachers are approaching is rapid and threatening, as they feel unsafe and their security has been exposed.
Some golfers who have been members of the Celebrity Golf Club for over 13 years said it is sad because golf has employed some of the youth employed as caddies and even players.
They stressed that at times, the encroachers are supported by some security agencies.
“How can civilised people destroy a golf course when we have only four in Ghana and many in other countries?” said one golfer.
The venue has also hosted several events, and it is one of the preferred golf destinations in Ghana.
Last week, Celebrity hosted the Female African Regional Tournament, which was a boost for tourism and sports as other nations’ representatives visited Ghana..
