Assembly Demolishes Structures at Atala Enclave to Make Way for Drainage Expansion and Market Reorganization

Residents and traders at the Atala enclave along the Kasoa–Accra Highway at Old Barrier in the Ga South Constituency have been affected following a demolition exercise carried out by an Assembly task force on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The exercise, according to the Assembly, was necessary to create space for the expansion and improvement of drainage gutters from ACC to Old Barrier, as well as to help reorganize traders operating in the area.

Authorities explained that the move forms part of efforts to address sanitation challenges, improve drainage systems, and reduce the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season.

The Assembly stated that traders and occupants of the affected structures had been given notices for a long period before the demolition exercise.

While some traders accepted the reasons behind the exercise and understood the need for proper planning and development, others ignored the warnings and continued operating from the affected areas.

The demolition led to the removal of several structures, affecting some traders who operated along the roadside.

Some residents expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the Assembly’s decision to improve the area, while others called for proper arrangements to support affected traders.

The Assembly has assured traders that the reorganization process will be done in an orderly manner to provide a safer and more suitable environment for businesses.

Authorities are urging residents and traders to cooperate with the exercise as efforts continue to improve sanitation, drainage, and development within the community.
