WBC Muay Thai Champion Lawrence Nmai calls for revival of Kickboxing in Ghana

Ghana’s celebrated Kickboxing and WBC Muay Thai champion and ambassador, Lawrence Nyanyo Nmai, has called for the revival of Kickboxing and more Muay Thai events to create entertainment and employment for strong sportsmen and women.

Speaking exclusively on Omashi TV’s popular show, ‘The Big Fight Night’, Nmai, also known as ‘The Punisher’, a two-time SWAG award winner in kickboxing, said it is sad that the sport is dying instead of putting on great shows like those happening worldwide.

He noted that Kickboxing is big in many countries and participants are raking in good money.

He urged the Ghana Kickboxing Association to sit up and organise the youth.

Lawrence Nyanyo Nmai, who is the son of Ataa Nmai, discoverer of the Labadi Pleasure Beach/a lifeguard, said it is sad that the once very popular destination has been demolished and prayed that it would be put to better and positive use while the government creates employment for the youth.

“The beach has been our home and everything. Now it’s no more. That is life, but there should have been a humane face as Christmas is approaching, and people could have made investments and borrowed to do business; anyway, let’s see what happens,” he said

The Europe-based sports star said the youth of La, Accra and Ghana should be supported to discover their talents.

He will be defending his WBC Muay Thai title in Thailand and also fighting in Japan.

Lawrence Nyanyo Nmai has sometimes single-handedly sponsored the national Kickboxing team to competitions and provided kits and transportation as well as per diems.

He loves to support the needy in sports and has helped boxers, footballers, table tennis and tennis players.

He founded the Power Zone Club, and later the Pro Fighting Factory, made up of the nation’s top fighters.

He said boxing is popular in Ghana, so the Kickboxing Association can collaborate with the Boxing Authority and Federation.

He commended the current leading boxers like Freezy Macbones and Theo Allotey, as well as young amateur boxers who displayed well against the Metro Detroit Golden Gloves.

Nmai also appealed to the media to support the least-funded and unpopular sports.
