Professor Fred Awaah, Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), and Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General, were some of the dignitaries spotted at the final lap of the historic 2026 EU Ambassadors Velocity Cycling Tour.
Prof. Fred Awaah rode from Shiashi and cycled alongside participants from Aburi to the Netherlands Embassy in Accra.
The remarkable moment marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s sporting history. According to the General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shabaan Mohammed, this is the first time a sitting Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority has actively participated in a cycling event of such distance, riding side-by-side with federation officials, diplomats, and national cyclists.
The EU Ambassadors’ journey of 800km from Tamale to Accra was graced by regional ministers, chiefs, and dignitaries who demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting cycling, environmental sustainability, and healthy living.
The participation of the NSA Board Chairman elevated the significance of the initiative and set a powerful precedent for the future of Ghana’s sports.
The Ghana Cycling Federation expressed its appreciation to all partners and stakeholders who supported the historic event to be successful.
The embassies that took part were Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, France, Denmark, Spain, Hungary, and Italy, with the support of Ghana, Togo, Malta, the European External Action Service, EU International Partnerships, as well as the Gladiators Cycling club and the media.
The tour, which was the first of its kind, was successful.
The Board Chairman of the NSA hoped the milestone would inspire a stronger national commitment to cycling as a tool for development, environmental sustainability, and unity.
