As part of the 2026 Ga Homowo Festival celebrations, the Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG), in collaboration with Maud Lokko International Foundation and Malik’s Foods, on Sunday organised an exciting Ampe competition at Anteh We, Teshie to create awareness of unity, peace and love among the community.
At the end of the tough competition, which featured youth and elderly women, Gbugblan took the trophy and other top prizes after beating Klemosu in the final.
President of WOSPAG, Madam Joyce Mahama, who also serves as President of African Women in Sports (AWISA), said Ampe is a traditional sport that must be encouraged to become very popular, as they aim to make it an international sport to feature at the African Games.
She congratulated the winners and urged them to train hard for future events.
She appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Sports Authority (NSA), and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to support women’s sports.
She stated that women have done much for Ghana Sports and they should be motivated.
Mrs. Mahama gave special mention to para athlete Zinabu Issah, who won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and the Black Queens who qualified Ghana for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1999.
She advised the current Black Queens to be determined and show character if they want to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
She expressed that Ampe can become big like football if the sports authorities invest more and support them to organise more events.
