Roads in Ruins: Anyaa-Sowutuom Residents Seek Urgent Action — “No Development, No Vote”

Residents of Anyaa-Sowutuom in the Ga Central Municipality are demanding urgent attention to address the worsening state of roads, poor drainage systems, recurring floods, and transportation challenges that have affected the growth and safety of the community.

The situation on some roads in Anyaa-Sowutuom has become a major concern for residents, who say the poor condition of roads has made movement stressful and unsafe. They complain that several roads are filled with potholes, broken surfaces, and muddy areas that become worse whenever it rains.

Drivers say the condition of the roads is affecting their vehicles, increasing repair costs and discouraging some commercial drivers from operating on certain routes. As a result, some residents are forced to walk long distances before getting to their destinations.

Residents also say the poor road network is affecting economic activities in the area. Traders explain that customers sometimes avoid certain parts of the community because of flooding and difficulty accessing shops, leading to reduced income and business challenges.

Another major concern raised by residents is the poor drainage system. They say some gutters are either too small, blocked with waste, or poorly constructed, making it difficult for rainwater to flow freely. During heavy rainfall, water overflows onto roads, homes, and business areas, causing destruction and inconvenience.

Some residents say they have lost valuable belongings due to floods, while others are worried about the continuous presence of stagnant water, which they believe creates sanitation and health concerns.

The flooding situation has also affected movement within the community. Residents say some roads become completely inaccessible after heavy rains, affecting school children, workers, traders, and elderly persons who struggle to move safely.

The issue of emergency transportation has become a serious concern. Residents explain that when emergencies occur, getting quick access to vehicles can be difficult because of the poor road conditions. They fear that delays in transporting sick persons, pregnant women, and accident victims could lead to serious consequences.

Community members are therefore appealing to the Member of Parliament, Hon. Emmanuel Tobbin, the Assembly Member, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and the Ga Central Municipal Assembly to take immediate steps to address the situation.

They are calling for:

  • Rehabilitation of damaged roads.
  • Construction and improvement of drainage systems.
  • Regular desilting of gutters.
  • Better access routes for emergency vehicles.
  • Sustainable development projects that will improve living conditions.

Residents say they have heard several promises over the years and are now looking for visible action that will transform their community. They insist that development should reflect in the daily lives of residents, leading to their message: “No Development, No Vote.”

“We are appealing to our leaders because this situation is affecting everyone. We struggle whenever it rains, and transportation becomes difficult. We need urgent solutions, not just promises.” — Resident

Residents believe that improving roads, drainage, and transportation will bring relief to the community, reduce flooding, protect lives and property, and support economic growth in Anyaa-Sowutuom.
