Mr. Isaac Ar-Eng Wakah, Municipal Environmental Health Officer at Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, has called on all Ghanaians to help in cleaning the country and maintaining effective environmental sanitation.
In an exclusive interaction with the media, he expressed that over the past one year, he has been involved in many activities and with the support of his MCE, MCD and management of the Assembly has undertaken series of programmes which include inspection of hotels, guest houses, markets, super markets, industries, factories, drinking spots, restaurants, chop bars, bakeries, clinics, hospitals, lorry parks, mechanics shops, filling stations etc to ensure implementation of cleanliness and sustainability and compliance enforcement.
The experienced environmental health professional added that they inspected schools and other educational institutions to ensure general sanitation, while also furthering education among teachers and students on personal hygiene.
According to Mr. Wakah, they also ensure that waste, both liquid and solid, is properly managed and disposed of in the right places. He stressed that people are taught personal hygiene.
He said enforcement of sanitation regulations in Ghana is not easy, as some people intentionally dump waste anywhere and leave it as such; however, the culprits would be dealt with to face the law if they are arrested.
He acknowledged the MCE, Member of Parliament, and staff at the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly for their support and interest in the job to clean their communities.
He advised the general public in his catchment area to support and collaborate.
“We see sanitation as a collective problem which must be solved collectively, and every day, it is a daily and individual affair, not once a month, for those who violate sanitation regulations with impunity would be put before the law for prosecution,” he noted.
He supported the President’s call for regular cleaning of waste to live in a hygienic environment.
