The Minority in Parliament has called for Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s immediate resignation over alleged discrepancies in payments to Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa.
`The Minority says President John Dramani Mahama should dismiss him if he refuses to step down.
The demand was made by Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, at a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
He called for an independent investigation into the payments.
The controversy centres on the government’s reported GH¢5,500 support package for each evacuee, comprising GH¢5,000 for reintegration and GH¢500 for transportation
The Minority alleges that some returnees received less than the announced amount and has raised concerns about payment records and signatures.
The Minority has also called for a comprehensive independent audit by an internationally reputable accounting firm. It wants the findings made public to establish whether the funds were properly disbursed and to ensure accountability in the use of public money.
However, Ablakwa has rejected claims that evacuation funds remain unaccounted for. He has maintained that all 1,964 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa received the announced allowances and has expressed readiness to cooperate with an audit.
The evacuation exercise followed xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The controversy has renewed calls for transparency in government expenditure, with the proposed independent audit expected to help establish the facts surrounding the disputed payments.
