The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for the urgent revival and expansion of Ghana’s Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit system as part of efforts to address growing urban transportation challenges.
According to the Minister, a properly functioning Ayalolo system could provide commuters with a more reliable, affordable and efficient alternative to existing public transport services, particularly in the Greater Accra metropolitan area.
Mr. Ibrahim said the government is working to strengthen the system, including plans to expand the Ayalolo fleet. The government has been pursuing a €1 million grant from Spain to support the programme, with plans reported in April 2026 to acquire about 200 additional buses.
He explained that revitalising Ayalolo is important to reducing pressure on the country’s already congested roads and improving the movement of workers, students and other commuters.
The Minister has also linked the revival of Ayalolo to the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, stressing the need for a public transport system capable of operating beyond conventional daytime hours.
Mr. Ibrahim has called for Ayalolo to be positioned to provide extended, potentially 24-hour services within the Greater Accra metropolitan area.
The Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit system was introduced to provide faster and more organised public transportation while helping to reduce congestion and travelling time. However, the system has faced several challenges over the years, including fleet deterioration, maintenance difficulties, inadequate dedicated bus lanes and operational constraints.
The government’s proposed expansion therefore represents an attempt to restore confidence in the system and make it a stronger component of Ghana’s urban transport network.
If successfully implemented, the revitalisation of Ayalolo could offer commuters a dependable alternative to conventional commercial transport while contributing to improved mobility and productivity in Ghana’s major urban centres.
The Minister has consequently urged relevant stakeholders to support efforts to protect public transport assets and ensure that the renewed Ayalolo system is managed efficiently and sustainably.
