Breast Cancer Awareness: Women Urged to Prioritise Regular Screening and Early Detection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period dedicated to educating women about breast cancer and encouraging early detection to save lives.

Breast cancer remains a major health concern for women around the world, making awareness, regular breast checks and early medical attention important in the fight against the disease.

The disease occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and may spread to other parts of the body if not treated early. Although breast cancer mostly affects women, men can also develop the disease.

Women are encouraged to pay attention to changes in their breasts, including unusual lumps, changes in breast size or shape, changes in the nipple, and abnormal discharge.

However, these signs do not always mean a person has breast cancer, so medical examination is necessary.
Health professionals also advise women to seek medical attention when they notice unusual changes rather than waiting for the symptoms to become severe.

Early detection can improve the chances of successful treatment. Women are therefore encouraged to speak with healthcare professionals about appropriate breast cancer screening based on their age, health history and risk factors.

Breast cancer awareness is not only about wearing pink ribbons or participating in campaigns. It is also about sharing accurate information, supporting people living with the disease and encouraging women to seek help without fear or shame.

As the world marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, every woman is reminded that her health matters. Families, communities and health organisations must work together to spread awareness and promote early detection.
