The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has called for urgent measures to address persistent container congestion at the Tema Port, warning that the situation is increasing delays and the cost of doing business for importers, exporters and other port users.
The Association says the congestion is contributing to traffic within the Tema port enclave and surrounding areas, while the accumulation of containers is putting additional pressure on available space and slowing the movement of goods.
According to the IEAG, there is a need for authorities and port stakeholders to work together to improve the evacuation and management of containers, particularly empty containers.
It believes a more efficient system will free up space, improve cargo handling and reduce delays in the clearance and movement of goods.
The Association has also called on the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to consider converting some spaces currently leased to private businesses into additional container terminal facilities when the relevant leases expire.
The proposed expansion, according to the IEAG, could increase container-handling capacity and help ease congestion at the country’s major port.
The call comes alongside concerns over additional charges affecting importers and exporters. The Association has urged the Transport Ministry to convene an urgent stakeholder meeting involving the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, shipping lines, shipping agents, freight forwarders, importers and exporters to resolve outstanding issues affecting port users
The IEAG maintains that an efficient port system is essential to reducing the cost of doing business, improving the movement of goods, strengthening investor confidence and supporting Ghana’s economic growth.
The Association is therefore urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent the congestion from worsening and to ensure that Tema Port remains efficient, competitive and responsive to the needs of businesses and the wider economy.
