The project follows persistent concerns from commuters, residents and business owners who have been affected by flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly, Adamu Musah Kalamu, said the flooding problem had persisted for between 10 and 15 years and described the new drainage project as a long-term solution.
The project involves the construction of a larger 5.2-metre drain beneath the access road. According to the MCE, the work is expected to be completed within four months.
The new drainage system will eventually connect to the drainage infrastructure being constructed around the Accra Academy School end of the stretch, creating a wider system to improve the movement of stormwater.
Mr Kalamu expressed appreciation to the Ablekuma North Member of Parliament, Ewurabena Aubynn, former Minister of Works and Housing Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, and Senior Presidential Advisor for Governmental Affairs, Dr Valerie Sawyerr, for their support towards the project.
The commencement of the project is expected to bring relief to road users and residents who have endured flooding along the corridor for several years, while also improving drainage and movement within the area.
