The ambitious Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project has moved closer to construction following the handover of 175.6 kilometres of cleared right-of-way by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
The handover marks a major step towards the commencement of actual construction of the expressway, which is expected to improve road connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods between Accra and Kumasi.
The road will pass through several communities along the corridor, including Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase and Kwaso.
President John Dramani Mahama said the Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces would play a major role in the implementation of the project.
“I have asked the Minister of Roads and Highways to incorporate the Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces as the major subcontractor on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” the President said.
The President also assured that funding would not be a challenge once the project begins, stressing the government’s commitment to ensuring that construction progresses without delays.
“When the project starts, money is not going to be a challenge,” he said.
President Mahama further assured contractors that payments for completed work would be made promptly, saying, “All certificates presented by the contractor will be paid instantly.”
The involvement of the GAF Engineer Regiment is expected to provide additional technical capacity for the project while supporting efforts to accelerate construction.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to enhance transportation along the corridor, improve access to communities along the route and contribute to economic activity when completed.
