CAA African Senior Athletics Championships officially launched at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana will host the 24th edition from May 12 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Stadium.
According to the President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Bawa Fuseini, a total of 54 African countries are expected to participate, bringing together some of the continent’s finest athletes.
Top athletes expected to compete include Faith Chepkoech and Beatrice Chebet. Strong relay teams such as the South African 4x100m squad and the Botswana 4x400m team are also anticipated to feature prominently.
To ensure world-class standards, additional electronic timing equipment will be procured to meet the level required for global competitions like the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic Games.
Officials emphasized that Ghana aims to avoid technical issues experienced in previous competitions in countries like Kenya and Nigeria.
So far, about 120 technical officials have been trained, with approximately 100 set to officiate during the championships.
Present at the launch were the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Awaah, Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddi Adams, President of Ghana Athletics, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, Director General of NSA, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and Administrator of Ghana Sports Funds, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku.
Some officers of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), federations, and the Sports Media were also in attendance.
Hon. Iddi Adams said the government is committed to hosting the Championships and every sporting discipline would be supported. He said Ghanaians should be grateful that the Sports Fund has been implemented after being passed by Parliament.
