Ghana Rugby Football Union Organises Women’s Day Friendly Games

As part of the International Women’s Day and Ghana Rugby Empower Her – Kayayei Programme: Empowering Women through Rugby, the Union organised a special fun games and training session for the female national team.

They were joined by the Kayayei team from Agbogbloshie, Griffons RFC from Cape Coast, and Success Rugby Club from Dodowa.

The session, which lasted for over five hours, saw the players going through drills, techniques, and tactics training under the direction of experienced coaches and officials.

Although the national stars proved to be fast and technically ahead, the young girls aged between 12 and 15 years from Success and Griffons also showed interest and desire to learn.

The physically fit Kayayei were very excited to learn new things, as most of them are trying to branch into sports.

In an exclusive interview, they said that rugby is tough yet exciting, and they want to play.

Sangbasangba Obreanya, Coach of the Kayayei Sports Club Association, said their players are naturally strong and all they need are the skills, which they are ready to learn and play.

President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Ms. Rafatu Inusah, was present and participated in the drills. She supported the coaches and expressed her joy to see young girls having a passion for Rugby.

“We have worked very hard today, and it is a good caus., I take the opportunity to salute all women as we celebrate International Women’s Day,” she expressed.

Chairman of the Kayayei Sports Association, Mr. Andrews, also noted that if the girls are engaged in profitable ventures, he will be happy, as some of the potters want to do other things, especially sports. “I think our love for Rugby has come to stay,” he stressed.

Ms. Samira Mensah, General Manager of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), who plays a key role in developing Women’s Rugby, including initiatives like the “Empower Her” Kayayei programme and “Rugby Rising,” said they are very glad that the Rugby gospel is moving fast and getting to the regions.

“Our message is catching up, and we are keen on promoting girls’ participation in sports and the grassroots is where we love to reach, like forming the Kayayei. Team, I think Rugby grassroots development is getting high. We thank our donors and sponsors because without them, we would lack a lot,” she stated

All the participants of the special training held at the Ghana Rugby Stadium at Legon received giftsfrom ther sponsors of Ghana Rugby.
