President Mahama informed of the passing of Dagbon overlord as nation pays tribute
President John Dramani Mahama has been formally informed about the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, as the Dagbon Kingdom officially notified the Presidency of the loss of the revered traditional leader.
A high-powered delegation from Dagbon, led by the Nanton Naa Mahamudu V, Paramount Chief of the Nanton Traditional Area, visited the Presidency in Accra to officially announce the death of the King and extend an invitation to President Mahama to participate in the traditional mourning activities.
The delegation conveyed the deep sorrow of the Dagbon people while recognising the important role played by the late Overlord in promoting peace, unity, and development throughout the Dagbon Kingdom.
The late Yaa Naa Abukari II passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, while receiving medical treatment in South Africa. He was later laid to rest at the sacred Gbewaa Palace in Yendi according to Islamic traditions and Dagbon customs.
President Mahama described the late Dagbon Overlord as a respected traditional leader and peacemaker whose reign contributed significantly to reconciliation and stability within Dagbon and Ghana as a whole.
The President noted that the late King’s leadership helped strengthen the traditional institution, creating a platform for dialogue, conflict resolution, and peaceful coexistence among the people.
