Power Restored After National Grid Disturbance, GRIDCo Explains Cause

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has explained the cause of the nationwide power outage that affected homes, businesses, and public institutions across Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to GRIDCo, the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 am., leading to the simultaneous tripping of several power generation plants connected to the national grid. The incident resulted in a widespread interruption in electricity supply across the country.

GRIDCo said engineers and system operators immediately activated emergency restoration procedures and worked closely with power generation companies, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and other stakeholders to restore stability to the national grid. Through coordinated efforts, power supply was gradually restored to affected areas.

GRIDCo assured the public that safeguarding the stability and reliability of the national transmission network remains a top priority. It noted that restoration work was carried out carefully to ensure the grid returned to normal operations without compromising the safety of the system.

They further disclosed that a comprehensive technical investigation has begun to determine the exact cause of the disturbance. The findings will help identify measures to strengthen the National Interconnected Transmission System and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

GRIDCo apologized to Ghanaians for the inconvenience caused by the outage and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by the public during the restoration process.
