President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to take steps to absorb GH¢2 on every litre of diesel as part of measures to cushion consumers against recent fuel price increases.
The intervention is aimed at reducing the impact of rising petroleum costs on Ghanaians, especially commercial drivers, businesses and households that have been affected by increases in transportation and operational expenses, and to ease the economic pressure on consumers and provide relief amid concerns over the rising cost of living.
The National Petroleum Authority is expected to engage stakeholders in the petroleum sector to ensure the implementation of the measure and guarantee that the intended benefits reach fuel users across the country.
The move is also expected to support the transport sector by helping to reduce fuel-related costs and minimize the impact of fuel price increases on fares and the prices of goods and services.
The government has indicated that it will continue to monitor developments in the petroleum sector and introduce further measures when necessary to protect consumers and maintain stability in fuel pricing.
