Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Association meets sports media after winning two medals in Abidjan

The Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Association on Thursday held a meeting with the sports media at the Ghana Olympic Committee Conference Room to inform them of its current status and plans.

The team that recently returned from the 2026 African Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with two medals- a gold and a bronze by Gabby Fenuku and Janet Acquah was introduced.

President of the Association, Mr. Jeff Taylor, who was elected Vice President of the continental body during the championship, commended the Ghanaian fighters and the technical staff who represented the nation with no financial support.

He expressed that Ghana has fighters who can do better if they are supported and prayed that MMA would become an Olympic sport in the future.

“It is an attractive sport, not dangerous, and can rake in money for the fighters; we need more fighters to come on board, boxers, judokas, kickboxers and other combat sports practitioners are welcome,” he said.

According to Mr. Taylor, the Ghana team needs a facility at the Accra Sports Stadium to train and logistics to inspire and motivate the fighters.

He announced that the World Championship will take place in Turkey in December and prayed that Ghana will be represented.

He commended Derrick Macaire, the internationally recognized and respected technical instructor and referee from Ghana who is imparting knowledge to many countries on the African continent.

He appealed to the media and corporate Ghana for support as MMA is not a dangerous sport, but rather lucrative and attractive.

Coaches Samuel Nii Tackie and Torado Bruce said Ghana has good fighters, but they need the technical skills and motivation to compete.
