The Christian Council of Ghana has established a technical committee to examine the way forward for the stalled National Cathedral project.
The committee, which brings together representatives from various Christian groupings, is expected to assess the practical issues surrounding the project, with particular attention to its funding and proposed location.
Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, said the committee has been given one month to complete its work and submit its recommendations.
The findings are expected to be presented to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, who will subsequently forward them to President John Dramani Mahama to guide decisions on the future of the project.
The development comes as renewed attention is being placed on how the National Cathedral should be financed. President Mahama has maintained that taxpayers’ money should not be used for the project and has suggested that Christians could contribute GH¢1,000 each towards its completion.
President Mahama has also questioned the proposed location of the cathedral, pointing to the concentration of major public facilities in the area and the demolition of properties to make way for the project. He has, however, stressed that he is not opposed to Ghana having a National Cathedral.
The technical committee’s recommendations are therefore expected to provide a clearer direction on the project’s financing, location and other outstanding issues. Its report could become an important basis for determining whether and how the long-stalled National Cathedral project moves forward.
