Shakul Samed and Sam Martei Laryea lose title bouts in Tanzania

Shakul Samed was robbed in Tanzania despite dominating local favourite Richard Mtangi, who retained the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Africa middleweight title on Thursday night in Dar-Es-Salaam on July 30, 2026.

Samed, who represented Ghana at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, came out boldly after the bout and expressed his disappointment about the results, which he did not understand and agree with, so he called for a rematch.

His trainer, Elvis Robertson of the famous Akotoku Academy, was also disappointed because they had really prepared and wanted the title to prove a point.

Tanzanian Ibrahim Mafia edged Samuel Martei Laryea on points to win the WBC international super bantamweight title at the Super Dome grounds, Masaki, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In the corner of Laryea was Coach George Smart-Abbey of the Accra Boxing Club based at Korle Gonno beach.

He said it was another experience and they have learnt their lessons.

He hoped that Tanzanian boxers would also come to Ghana to suffer the same fate.

Meanwhile, some boxing fans, including former world champion Joshua Clottey, have warned Ghanaian boxers to beware of Tanzanian boxing promoters.
