Stephen Appiah to face Asamoah Gyan in special match at Ga Mantse Tennis Open Tournament

The Ga Mantse Tennis Open Tournament has been launched at the Ga Traditional Council, Ga Mantse Palace, at North Kaneshie in Accra, with the Tornado and Baby Jet to feature as super guests.

The Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, exhibited his tennis skills after he officially declared the Tournament dully launched on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

As part of the attractions of the tournament, the two legendary football captains of the Ghana Black Stars, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, will engage in a special tennis match at the Frank Ofori Center Court of the Accra Sports Stadium on a date to be announced.

The Ga Mantse Open men and women singles will be determined, as well as a wheelchair tennis match and a massive funfair featuring traditional leaders, celebrities and dignitaries.

Ms. Gina Nettey, CEO of GeNet, who put together the proposal and package, said the maiden Ga Mantse Tennis Open is to create opportunities for the youth and the Tennis fraternity.

Mr. Isaac Aboagye Duah. President of the Ghana Tennis Federation was delighted that another event has been added to the Tennis Calendar and hoped players and officials will take advantage to excel and dare to win.

Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, expressed that tennis comes after Formula One and golf in the list of most rewarding sports and prayed that more people will start playing tennis.

Chief of Staff at the Ga Mantse Palace, Madam Julia Naa Yarley Adjei Amoah, who delivered a speech on behalf of Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, noted that girls must be encouraged to be adventurous and engage in sports activities, especially Tennis.

She underscored the importance of tennis in instilling discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking among the youth.

Mr. Peter Annan aka Grandmaster, a great Tennis legend who has won many tournaments, organised many championships, and trained many players, was very happy that the sport has attracted the attention of HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and thanked the organisers for creating awareness on tennis among students.

Students from St. Mary’s SHS, Accra Wesley Girls SHS and Labone SHS were present.

Some of the corporate institutions supporting the Ga Mantse Tennis Tournament are the National Sports Authority,  Ghana Tourism Authority, Blue Skies, Peeva and Decathlon.

The tournament, which is part of the Homowo Festival celebrations, aims to leverage the power of sports to foster community unity, drive youth development, and promote sports tourism across the Ga State and Ghana.
